Prestatyn Town-A Campaign to remember
On the 25th October 2016, news began to break that the Seasiders had been hit by a £53,000 fine from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (commonly abbreviated to HMRC), which related to players wages and expenses following a 2 and a half year investigation. At the time, Prestatyn Town was sitting comfortably at the top of the Huws Gray Alliance, remaining unbeaten in the league. All the positivity at their performances quickly evaporated as football fans quickly realised that the club’s existence was on the line. However, the community rallied around, and the club successfully raised the required £53,000 within 4 weeks.
What is perhaps even more impressive, is that whilst the club were struggling off the pitch, the results on the pitch continued, with the club remaining unbeaten on top of the table. Many clubs would have become distracted and allowed the performances on the pitch to suffer as a result, but not the Seasiders. From then on, the club never looked back, going from strength to strength as they raced forwards towards their goal.
On the 11th of March 2017, Prestatyn Town was confirmed as Champions of the league following a 1–0 victory against Gresford Athletic, only failing to win 3 matches all season (2 draws and 1 loss). With the title confirmed, the club was forced to wait to secure promotion, with the Licences being awarded on the 6th of April 2017.
As the licences were finally confirmed, fans reacted positively to the news that Prestatyn Town was awarded their FAW Domestic Licence for the 2017/18 season, confirming their return to the Welsh Premier League, following a 2-year absence. This season will no doubt live long in the memories of everyone involved with Prestatyn Town Football Club, from their sensational start to the season, to overcoming a devastating obstacle in order to find great success on their route to securing a return to the top flight of Welsh football.
