Y Ddraig is pleased to announce that we have agreed on a partnership with Newport City F.C., a football side currently playing in Welsh Football League, Division Three.
The team nicknamed “The Steelmen”, have been in existence since 1963 and were originally known as Spencer Works AFC. They were elected to the Welsh football league in 1972 where they have remained.
In 1988, they changed their name to Llanwern AFC which reflected the change in name of the steel works on whose ground they played, and in 1992 they gained promotion to the top flight in the Welsh Football League.
The team stayed in the top two divisions for a number of years and won the Welsh League Cup in 2002. In 2003 the side moved to Newport Stadium to play their home games and remained there ever since. In 2016, the FAW agreed to the club changing its name to Newport City F.C.
Y Ddraig is very pleased to be able to support this club which has a lot of history, and we look forward to them getting back to the level that they were at previously, and we will be eagerly watching how the team do. Expect us to be writing match reviews and keeping you the readers, updated on how the team are doing. A link to the Newport City F.C. website is at the bottom of our respective pages on the website under external links, but below also is the link if you want to find out more about the club:
